About This Performance
Experience an evening of evocative sound worlds as the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra presents a program featuring Jean Sibelius’s String Quartet “Intimate Voices”, a work of remarkable emotional depth and lyric beauty. Written during a time of profound personal reflection, Sibelius’s quartet unfolds with haunting intimacy, revealing the composer’s unmistakable Nordic voice in its most personal form.
The program is complemented by a selection of traditional music from lands surrounding the North Sea, offering a vibrant contrast of earthy rhythms, luminous melodies, and centuries-old storytelling. Together, these works create a musical journey through the landscapes and cultures of the North—where stillness and intensity, simplicity and richness, exist in striking balance.

About This Series
It’s no surprise that most musicians reply “chamber music!” when asked about their favourite music to play. Written for a living room “chamber” rather than a concert hall, it’s music written for a cozy gathering of friends and neighbours that are close enough to hear the softest whisper. Chamber music requires each player to shrug off convention, express their unique voice and make music spontaneously, responding to each other and to the audience.
