About This Performance
Schumann’s piano quintet is considered one of his finest compositions. Composed in 1842, the work revolutionized the musical character of the piano quintet and established it as a quintessentially Romantic genre. The SSO String Quartet and pianist Charlene Biggs have paired this groundbreaking work with the world premiere of a new Piano Quintet by the SSO’s own William Rowson, composed during his first year here in Sudbury.

About This Series
It’s no surprise that most musicians reply “chamber music!” when asked about their favourite music to play. Written for a living room “chamber” rather than a concert hall, it’s music written for a cozy gathering of friends and neighbours that are close enough to hear the softest whisper. Chamber music requires each player to shrug off convention, express their unique voice and make music spontaneously, responding to each other and to the audience.
