Introducing Yu Pei, SSO Principal Cello

Following a national search and two-stage audition process, we are delighted to announce the appointment of Yu Pei as the new Principal Cellist of the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra, and cello instructor at the Sudbury Symphony Music Conservatory.

Originally from China, Yu began studying the cello at a young age and earned her Bachelor of Music in Cello Performance from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. She later completed her Master of Music in Cello Performance at Brandon University, studying with Dr. Leanne Zacharias.

Yu’s musical background includes solo, orchestral, and chamber music experience in Canada, China, and the United States. She was a full-scholarship member of the National Youth Orchestra of China (NYO-China), performing at Carnegie Hall, Beijing Concert Hall, and Shanghai Oriental Art Center. She was also selected for the inaugural Youth Music Culture Guangdong, now Youth Music Culture The Greater Bay Area, under the artistic direction of Yo-Yo Ma.

Her early achievements include a solo concert at the Wuhan Conservatory of Music, Second Place in the Young Cellist Group at the Hong Kong International String Competition, and recognition as a finalist in the China National Youth Cello Competition. Before joining the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra, Yu served as Principal Cellist of the Timmins Symphony Orchestra and performed regularly with ensembles throughout Northern Ontario and Quebec.

As a teacher, Yu has more than ten years of experience working with students from beginner to advanced levels. She believes that good teaching should be clear, patient, and encouraging, helping students build healthy technique, a beautiful sound, and confidence in their own musical voice.

Yu also enjoys chamber music and collaborative projects, including her work as a co-founder of Bella Corda String Ensemble. Outside of music, she enjoys quiet time at home with her adorable cat, Puppy.
