Community Musician Auditions

Community Musician Auditions

The Sudbury Symphony Orchestra (SSO) is holding community auditions for local musicians to join the ensemble for the upcoming concert season. This is an exciting opportunity to rehearse and perform with a professional-caliber orchestra and participate in the vibrant cultural life of Greater Sudbury.

If you’re a professional, music teacher, dedicated hobbyist, or someone who’s been missing the joy of playing with others, we’d love to hear from you.

Auditions are open for all orchestral sections, with current openings in our string and woodwind sections. Successful candidates for sections with no current vacancies may be offered a reserve position.

As a musician with the SSO, you will:

  • Pursue artistic excellence in the performance of a wide range of exciting orchestral repertoire
  • Learn from supportive peers and professional artistic leadership
  • Rehearse and perform regularly
  • Collaborate with both professional and volunteer musicians
  • Connect with audiences through meaningful live performances

Skill Level Guidelines:
Examples of SSO repertoire indicative of playing level include Dvořák’s Slavonic Dance Op. 46 No. 1, and Mozart’s Symphony No. 35.

To ensure a cohesive and high-level ensemble, the following qualifications are recommended:

  • Proficiency on an orchestral instrument
  • Strong sight-reading skills
  • Prior experience in orchestral or ensemble performance
  • Availability for rehearsals and scheduled concerts throughout the season

Auditions will take place on September 10th, 2025.

Registration Deadline September 1st, 2025

Interested musicians should prepare two short pieces/excerpts of their choice, contrasting in style, and totalling approximately three minutes. Repertoire suggestions are available if needed. Candidates will be asked to sight read as part of the audition. To register or request more information, contact us at join@sudburysymphony.com or call 705-673-1280.
