The Sudbury Symphony Orchestra, the Bel Canto Chorus, and the Sudbury Chamber Singers present Mozart’s Requiem!
Mozart’s Requiem in D minor, K. 626 is a fascinating and emotionally stirring choral masterpiece whose genesis is shrouded in mystery. According to legend, Mozart was in a depressed state of mind when he received an anonymous commission to compose a Requiem Mass. His health was deteriorating, and he believed he had been cursed to write a requiem as a ‘swansong’ for himself, because he was sure he was about to die.

Special Guest Conductor: Dr. Joshua Wood
Dr Wood has performed, conducted, and taught music throughout Canada and the United States. Since 2016, he has served as Music Director of the Timmins Symphony Orchestra and Chorus (TSO), and since 2022 he has served as Music Director of the North Bay Symphony Orchestra.
A native of London, Ontario, Josh completed his Bachelor of Music (Hons. Performance) degree at Western University before pursuing graduate studies in Horn and Conducting at the Eastman School of Music and the University of Cincinnati. He is an alumni of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, National Academy Orchestra, Banff Summer Masterclass Program, and the Académie Domaine Forget.
An active soloist and chamber musician, he regularly performs as a member of the TSO Chamber Ensemble, and has also performed with numerous orchestras including the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra, North Bay Symphony Orchestra, Richmond (IN) Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra London Canada/London Symphonia, Guelph Symphony Orchestra, and Stratford Symphony Orchestra.
Currently the brass and advanced piano instructor at the TSO’s Geoffrey James Lee School of Music, Josh has taught extensively, including numerous collegiate lecture and masterclass presentations in Canada and the U.S., and he is a former faculty member of the Kincardine Summer Music Festival. As a conductor, he has worked with the University of Cincinnati Wind Ensemble and Concert Orchestra, the London Community Orchestra, members of the Western Symphony, CCM Chamber Winds, and the London Youth Orchestra, as well as several secondary school ensembles in the U.S. In his free time, Josh enjoys cross-country skiing, mountain biking, hockey, tennis, baseball, and fishing.

Choir master: Susan Urquhart
Under the Musical Direction of Susan Urquhart, the Sudbury Chamber Singers and the Bel Canto Chorus are community choirs established separately in 1975.
The Bel Canto Chorus has roots that go back to the Sudbury Philharmonic Society which split into the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra and The Bel Canto Chorus.
The Sudbury Chamber Singers was formed through the merging of two small chamber groups (the Copper Cliff Singers and the Tudor Singers). The core repertoire of the choir was historically cappella music however the Choir has transitioned from strict classical / chamber concerts to now perform a variety of styles, including contemporary, jazz, pop and musicals.
Susan holds a Bachelor of Music in Performance and a Licentiate of Music with a specialty in Performance, both from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario.
Susan has performed with opera companies, choirs and orchestras throughout Ontario. During her studies at Queen’s University, Susan performed extensively in Eastern Ontario as both a violinist (Kingston Symphony, Mississauga Youth Orchestra, Sudbury Symphony Orchestra) and vocal soloist (Queen’s University, Melos Choir). Susan has worked under the baton of Sir Andrew Savid, David Zafner, Brian Jackson and Gordon Craig. Susan currently teaches voice and violin privately being a certified RCM instructor and Suzuki certified.
