About this performance

Revelry & Ritual moves between introspection and exuberance in a program rich with contrast and colour, starting with the wild energy of Dvořák’s Slavonic Dances. Cellist Dobrochna Zubek brings passion and depth to Bruch’s Kol Nidrei for cello and orchestra. The journey culminates in Mozart’s storied “Prague” Symphony—a truly effervescent expression of joy.

The SSO Matinée Series presents a shorter, earlier version of the Main Stage program, with no intermission.  Approx. 70 Minutes

SOLOIST

Dobrochna Zubek

Cello

Dr. Dobrochna Zubek’s journey as a cellist is one of curious exploration, artistry, and global connection. Born in Poland and based in Toronto, Dobrochna has carved a unique path as a soloist, chamber musician, orchestral player, and educator, bringing her soulful sound to audiences across Europe, Asia, and North America.

Equally at home on concert stages and in experimental theatre, Zubek’s career spans continents and genres. She made her New York debut at La MaMa in the Off-Broadway production This is Why We Live, where her playing was praised as virtuosic and emotionally rich. From 2009 to 2012, she performed with the Orquesta Sinfónica del Estado de México, and has appeared at major festivals including Ottawa Chamberfest. She has shared the stage with icons like Peter Gabriel, Shauna Rolston and José Carreras, and is currently the newest member of the Toronto-based Quartetto Gelato.

Zubek holds degrees from Towson University, the Conservatoire de Versailles and the University of Toronto, where she completed her doctorate in cello performance with Shauna Rolston. A passionate teacher, she’s led masterclasses around the world, from Poland to Hong Kong.
