About This Performance

Fauré Requiem

Performed by two choirs, two vocal soloists and 13 SSO musicians, Fauré’s timeless Requiem offers listeners a transcendent glimpse of the divine, presented in the intimate setting and beautiful acoustic of St. Andrews Place.

Edward Elgar’s Serenade for Strings fits beautifully with the Fauré and in fact the two works were composed within a year of each other.

Approx. 65 Minutes with no Intermission

What is a Requiem? It is a musical composition typically for orchestra, chorus and soloists, expressing text from the Catholic mass for the dead. The name comes from the first line: ‘Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine’ — ‘Grant them eternal rest, Lord’. Originally intended for funeral services, it evolved over the centuries into a musical genre performed in concert, with over 2000 musical compositions so far. Composers are perhaps attracted to the challenges and themes of the Requiem, exploring the deepest of emotions and mysteries.
